The Importance of Testimonials

I cannot stress enough how important testimonials are. They are a vital part of letting other people see how others feel about your business and/or your products.  When there are lots of competing service and product companies out there, especially on the internet, people want to see what others are saying about you, how they feel about your products – what makes you stand out.

What counts as a Testimonial? Whether you own and shop on etsy and get feedback, have gotten positive tweets or FB comments or you have feedback from clients via email – you can use those.  Need testimonials? Don’t be afraid to ask.  Don’t be a pest, but asking for testimonials is fine, especially with those around you that you have built relationships with. A simple “Would you mind writing me a quick testimonial (or review) about my services (or products)? I’m trying to help grow my business and using your thoughts would be really helpful!” will do the trick. Most people around you want to see you succeed, and if they can write up a quick blurb about you or your business, most are more than willing.

Protect the Identity of the Testimonial Givers. Don’t give the full name of the person giving their testimonial, unless they have given you specific permission that they are OK with it.  Personally, I use first names, last initial and the location.  For example: Kristina S., Denver, CO .  The chances of someone being named Kristina S. is higher than using my last name, however, with common names it can separate the different testimonials. The location helps show the variety of locations that my customers are located. This shows diversity in where your clients are located.

Set Up A Place Where Clients/Customers Can Leave Feedback. Whether you have a business website, or a blog that you promote your business with, create space that your clients or customers can leave feedback for you. This makes it easy for them, and easy for you.

Just Starting Your Business & Don’t Have An Extensive List (or a List at all) of Customer/Clients?  Instead of asking for testimonials that are specific to your business, ask for a character recommendation. Ask them to write one about you, and your reliable sense of character. These types of testimonials are just as important as the ones specifically about your business and products. Why?  You are the person behind the company. Having testimonials talking about you positively helps your business shine even more!

Go get some testimonials!  What are you waiting for?
